Following Eid and Pahela Baisakh, Khatunganj, the main wholesale market, has resumed operations. Sugar prices have declined by Tk 120 per maund within days, now trading at Tk 4,780 to Tk 4,800 per maund. Reduced transactions post-holidays and suspension of goods transportation have led to the drop. Sugar demand usually spikes in summer, but the market has weakened due to decreased activity. Despite sugar’s demand doubling in summer, traders anticipate market recovery next week, aided by reduced prices. S Alam Sugar mill, a major supplier, faced disruptions due to a warehouse fire, impacting supply briefly. Additionally, government measures, including fair price programs and increased production, have stabilized sugar prices.
