The Bangladesh Sugar Refiners Association (BSRA) stated that sugar smuggling deprives the government of Tk 3,000 crore annually. Around 24 lakh tonnes of sugar are needed yearly, but only 30,000 to 35,000 tonnes are locally sourced, prompting imports. Imported sugar, primarily from Brazil, India, and Australia, amounts to 95% of the total, with just 15,000 tonnes produced daily by local refiners, surpassing the daily demand of 6,500 tonnes. The BSRA highlighted that unscrupulous traders are repackaging smuggled sugar in branded packages, posing health risks to consumers. They urged the government to take immediate action to curb sugar smuggling.
