Bangladesh’s Summit Group has inked a preliminary agreement to supply 1.5 million metric tons of liquefied natural gas (LNG) annually to Petrobangla for 15 years, starting in October 2026. The deal, awaiting cabinet clearance, does not specify the origin of the LNG, providing flexibility for Summit to source cargo globally.
This marks Bangladesh’s fourth long-term LNG supply pact and Summit’s first. The conglomerate, which operates numerous fossil fuel-based power units and an LNG-import handling FSRU, plans a $3 billion investment in clean energy. Summit aims to commence construction of the $1 billion Matarbari onshore LNG terminal in 2025, with an eye on commissioning by 2029. Spot LNG purchases in Bangladesh are expected to rise amid lower global prices and increasing power demand.
