The US dollar’s exchange rate with the taka remained unaffected despite an unofficial directive from Bangladesh Bank for a Tk 0.50 appreciation. The Bangladesh Foreign Exchange Dealers’ Association and the Association of Bankers, Bangladesh decided to sell each US dollar at Tk 110.50 to importers, but many banks paid remitters Tk 122 to Tk 123 and exporters Tk 113 to Tk 114 per US dollar.
Bankers claimed that the Bafeda-ABB rate was not effective, accusing them of imposing rates without bank adoption. Bangladesh Bank defended the decision, stating that the rate is determined by supply and demand, with a current account surplus of $1 billion. Analysts suggest a floating exchange rate or a managed floating exchange rate to address market fluctuations.
