Taste of mango driving exports

Industry: Agriculture & Livestock, Agro

Over the past few years, Bangladesh has witnessed a remarkable surge in mango exports, driven by the distinct taste of its mango varieties that helps overcome competition despite unfavorable conditions. This growth has instilled hope among mango exporters, while the government is actively working on infrastructure development to facilitate export. Despite challenges, such as cargo space shortages and higher freight charges, Bangladeshi mangoes have found primary markets in the Middle East and significant potential in countries like the United Kingdom, Sweden, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and Germany. Among the 72 mango varieties grown in Bangladesh, 21 are exported.

However, exporters face limitations due to early competition from India and Pakistan, transportation costs, and inadequate cooling systems resulting in significant wastage. To enhance mango exports, increased production, supply, involvement of educated entrepreneurs, and improvements in packaging, transportation, and storage are necessary, along with government support in terms of reduced taxes and dedicated cargo services. Efforts are underway through projects like the “Exportable Mango Production Project” to boost quality mango production and promote Bangladesh’s presence in the global market, aiming to export around one lakh tonnes of mangoes this year.
