Investigations by the Central Intelligence Cell (CIC) of Bangladesh are revealing significant discrepancies between the declared incomes and actual assets of prominent businessmen. Former lawmaker Saifuzzaman Chowdhury reported a wealth of Tk 180 million but paid only Tk 1.9 million in taxes on a declared income of Tk 7.4 million. Other figures, including Aziz Khan of Summit Group and Salman F Rahman of Beximco, also show inconsistencies. Experts like Professor Mustafizur Rahman call for intensified scrutiny of high-net-worth individuals to uncover hidden assets. Under the Income Tax Act 2023, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) can now demand taxes based on the market value of unreported assets, aiming to curb tax evasion.
