Approximately 35.40 lakh tax returns were submitted in Bangladesh by January 31, 2024, reflecting a 17% increase compared to the same period last year. Despite this, experts find the number unsatisfactory, considering there are nearly 1 crore Tax Identification Number (TIN) holders, and around two-thirds of them have yet to submit returns. Concerns about potential risks, fear of harassment by tax authorities, decreased actual income due to inflation, and lack of accurate information about new tax laws are cited as reasons for the low submission rate. The National Board of Revenue (NBR) chairman, however, expressed optimism, emphasizing that the deadline for company returns extends to February 28.
