The National Board of Revenue (NBR) faces a daunting task of collecting Tk 1.50 trillion in the last quarter of the fiscal year to meet its revised target, as current tax receipts show shortfalls. Until March 2024, the NBR had collected 63.36% of its revised annual target. The July-March tax revenue collection was Tk 2.59 trillion, leaving a shortfall of Tk 219.30 billion against the pared-down annual target of Tk 4.10 trillion. Dr. Ahsan H Mansur forecasts a potential shortfall of Tk 300 billion by year-end. While tax mobilization grew by 15.21% compared to last year, lack of reform and tax evasion remain challenges. VAT collection led revenue, followed by income tax and customs. Despite growth in tax revenue, challenges persist in meeting targets amidst economic factors and tax evasion.
