The government’s overall tax revenue collections for the July-April period of the current fiscal year fell short of the revised target by 29.42%, amounting to a shortfall of Tk 242.07 billion. The NBR collected approximately Tk 2.89 trillion against a revised target of Tk 3.13 trillion for FY 2023-24. VAT collections at the local stage totaled Tk 1.13 trillion by April 2024, 25.04% or Tk 47.79 billion lower than the revised target of Tk 1.184 trillion. However, VAT collections grew by 16.01% compared to the previous year’s Tk 980.14 billion. Revenue from exports and imports fell short by 25.45%, totaling Tk 825.22 billion, while income tax and travel tax collections missed the target by 36.89%, amounting to Tk 931.45 billion. Despite these shortfalls, these revenue streams showed increases of 11.18% and 19.33% respectively, compared to the previous year’s figures of over Tk 742.21 billion and Tk 780.58 billion. The original tax revenue target for the current fiscal year was set at Tk 4.30 trillion, but it was revised down to Tk 4.10 trillion a few months ago.
