In the context of onion imports in Bangladesh, concerns arise regarding the substantial price gap between government and private levels. The Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) imported 201 metric tons of onions from India at a rate of 220 USD per ton, equivalent to 24.27 taka per kilogram.
In contrast, private importers acquired onions at 140 USD per ton, translating to 15.44 taka per kilogram. This reveals a notable difference of approximately 14 taka per kilogram. TCB claims to have delegated onion imports to NS Construction, but the firm’s manager refutes involvement in imports. The total cost for TCB’s recent import was 90,312 USD, amounting to 44.8 dollars or 4,941.4 taka per kilogram.
Local traders, importing 278 metric tons, incurred a cost of 140 dollars per ton, equating to 53 taka per kilogram, inclusive of assessment values. The price disparity prompts discussions about syndicates, and stakeholders propose government intervention to stabilize onion prices.
