The Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) has requested a subsidy of over Tk 16 billion to cover financial losses incurred from selling essential commodities at subsidized rates for six months. The subsidy is sought for the period of July-December 2022, during which TCB procured commodities like soybean oil, sugar, lentil, gram, and onion from both local and foreign sources for sale at subsidized rates.
Data shows that TCB incurred significant trade gaps, such as a Tk 5.36 billion loss from selling lentils, a Tk 2.07 billion loss from selling sugar, a Tk 8.52 billion loss from selling soybean oil, and a Tk 293 million loss from selling onions. TCB Chairman attributed the higher trade gap for onions to stable local market prices, necessitating higher subsidization for TCB sales. The corporation had to obtain loans against trust receipts from banks at a 9.0% interest rate and paid a 2.0% income tax when sourcing commodities from the local market.
