The Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) has taken a significant step to alleviate the burden of food inflation on low-income families by initiating the sale of essential items at subsidized rates. Commencing on July 16 and continuing throughout the month, the TCB will offer one-crore family card holders across the country the opportunity to purchase key food items at affordable prices. This move comes as the year-on-year average inflation rate for FY23 reached 9.02%, with food inflation witnessing an increase of 8.37%.
Under this program, each family card holder will be able to buy five kilograms of rice for Tk 30 per kg, two liters of soybean oil for Tk 100 per liter, one kilogram of sugar for Tk 70 per kg, and two kilograms of lentils for Tk 60 per kg. The TCB aims to extend much-needed relief to those grappling with the food inflation crisis. The initiative is a direct response to the prime minister’s directive, and it marks the first time the TCB is offering rice at such subsidized rates, making it a crucial step in providing support to low-income households. Through collaboration with City Corporations and District and Upazila administrations, the TCB will organize sale campaigns at fixed points and shops across the nation. The food minister is set to inaugurate the program at the ‘Polwel Convention Shopping Centre’ in Abdullahpur, Dhaka. This initiative is a commendable effort by the government to ensure essential food items remain accessible and affordable for those in need.
