A new tea auction center has commenced operations in Panchagarh, Bangladesh’s northwest border district, becoming the country’s third such establishment, in addition to the ones in Chattogram and Sreemangal. The Commerce Minister inaugurated the center, emphasizing the importance of ensuring fair prices for tea growers.
Local growers were previously forced to sell their tea leaves for Tk 15 per kg, lower than the Tk 18 per kg fixed by the Panchagarh District Tea Leaves Price Fixation Committee. The Commerce Minister urged factory owners to consider the interests of growers and highlighted the unacceptability of deductions, sometimes up to 50%, for moisture content. The expansion of tea cultivation in Panchagarh and nearby districts has made them significant contributors to Bangladesh’s tea production, with 1.78 crore kgs of processed tea worth Tk 260 crore produced last year (2022), accounting for 19% of the nation’s total tea cultivation.
