The newly established tea auction center in Panchagarh, Bangladesh, which commenced operations on September 2nd, is the country’s third such facility, following those in Chattogram and Sreemangal. This center has significantly contributed to economic growth by eliminating the need for farmers and traders to transport processed tea leaves to distant auction centers, thereby reducing costs and time.
The Trade and Commerce Minister inaugurated the center. Tea cultivation in the northern districts has expanded, with 12,079 acres under cultivation. Last year (2022), these areas produced 1.78 crore kg of tea worth Tk 260 crore, contributing significantly to the national tea production. This year, the region expects to produce 2 crore kg of tea. The government is also considering reopening Thakurgaon airport to facilitate faster communication for buyers and bidders from across the country.
The new tea auction center in Panchagarh has positively impacted the local economy, offering fair prices, reducing costs, and promoting tea cultivation in the region. It plays a crucial role in the country’s tea industry and is set to further boost business and employment opportunities and improve infrastructure.
