In 2023, Bangladesh achieved a record tea production of 102.92 million kilograms, marking a 9.69% increase from the previous year’s 93.83 million kilograms. Despite a slow start due to insufficient rainfall, favorable weather conditions and collaborative efforts among stakeholders, including the commerce ministry and tea board, contributed to the bumper harvest.
The Bangladesh Tea Board implemented measures such as a mandatory 2.5% annual increase in plantation area, modern training for workers, and the distribution of free saplings and plucking machines. However, tea garden owners expressed dissatisfaction with consistently low prices throughout the year, impacting sales and posing challenges to the industry’s sustainability. Tea exports increased to 1.04 million kilograms in 2023, compared to 0.78 million kilograms in 2022.
