Tea sales in Bangladesh witnessed a decline during the 12th National Assembly election season in January,2024, contrary to the usual trend. Auction sales data revealed a 1.54% decrease, with 6.92 million kg sold in 35 auctions compared to 7.03 million kg in the same period last season. Tea traders attributed the decline to reduced demand in the market and increased tea supply. The tea marketing companies reported lower sales in tea stalls, which account for 50-55% of total tea consumption, noting that demand did not increase during the elections. Factors such as a shift to liquor tea and higher costs also contributed to decreased tea consumption. Despite record-high tea production, frustrated producers face falling prices in auctions.
