Telecom Regulator Seizes Thousands of SIMs in VoIP Crackdown

The telecom regulator seized over 17,354 SIM cards in Nayapaltan and Khilgaon, targeting illegal VoIP operators. The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) Enforcement and Inspection Directorate, with RAB support, conducted the operation. Confiscated items included 56 unauthorized SIM boxes, 19 routers, 22 modems, 18 pen drives, 23 antennas, various VoIP equipment, and SIM cards from different telecom operators. Two individuals involved in the VoIP business were arrested, with cases being filed under the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulation Act, 2001. VoIP technology enables voice calls using a broadband Internet connection instead of traditional phone lines.

Mobile operators cited this as the primary reason for the largest single-quarter decline in recent years, with 36 lakh subscribers lost in July and August and 16.3 lakh in September.

Teletalk Introduces Trial Online SIM Service at Tk 250

Initially available in 11 post offices across Rajshahi, Naogaon, and Chapainawabganj districts, the service integrates SIM distribution with the Bangladesh Postal Department’s extensive network.
