The situation with Teletalk’s mobile network towers lacking adequate battery backup systems has been highlighted, contributing to customer frustrations and a decline in its subscriber base.
Teletalk operates 5,661 base transceiver stations (BTSs), but 21.52% lack sufficient battery backup. Around 40% of towers cannot provide network access during power outages lasting more than an hour. Efforts to address the issue include initiatives to increase battery backup duration, with a proposed Tk 45 crore project for batteries and rectifiers. A Tk 2,204 crore project for 5G readiness is ongoing, which will allocate funds to upgrade power backup systems.
Customers are experiencing signal loss and network unavailability during power outages, leading to dissatisfaction. Teletalk’s customer base has been declining, with a market share of just 3.38% and a loss of 2.3 lakh customers despite an overall increase in mobile subscribers.
