Authorities have announced the temporary closure of three export-oriented garment factories belonging to DIRD Group due to ongoing workers’ protests in Savar, Dhaka. The factories, namely Dird Garments Ltd, Dipta Garments Ltd, and Dird Washing Plant Ltd, will remain closed from June 25th to July 7th, 2023. The decision was made for security reasons following an incident that raised concerns among the management. The workers were also paid their Eid bonuses on the same day. In response to the closure, some workers protested at another factory owned by the group, Dipta Apparels Ltd, but were dispersed by the police. The situation is currently calm, with additional police deployed in the area. The closure and protests highlight the challenges faced by the garment industry in maintaining labor relations and addressing worker grievances.
