Commercial mango cultivation is on the rise in Rangamati, Khagrachari, and Bandarban districts, driven by high market demand. The hill districts’ favorable weather and fertile soil have contributed to a bumper mango yield this season. With a production target exceeding two lakh tonnes of mangoes worth Tk 900 crore, farmers are experiencing early fruit availability and satisfactory market prices. The region cultivates various domestic and foreign mango species, with Amrapali and Ranguai being the most popular varieties. Local market prices range from Tk 40-200 per kg, and these mangoes are also exported to other districts. The visually appealing, delicious, and sizable mangoes from this region are in high demand nationwide. The Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) reports Bandarban as the district with the highest mango production, and efforts are underway to expand cultivation with new hill-adapted mango varieties. While mango farming thrives, marginal farmers express concerns over low market prices and the lack of proper storage facilities. The government is working on establishing modern cold storage units to address these challenges.
