Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company inadvertently cut off legitimate gas supply to industries in Gazaria, Munshiganj, for over a month while attempting to sever illegal household connections. This led to the halt of production in more than a dozen factories, affecting 10,000 to 12,000 workers’ salaries ahead of Eid-ul-Adha. The gas shortage disrupted delivery deadlines for foreign buyers and loan repayments.
Despite assurances from the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (Bida) to restore gas supply within four to five days, no visible action has been taken. Titas attributed the delay to the need to eliminate over 15,000 illegal connections, compared to 2,500 legitimate ones, in the Gazaria region. Gas-dependent industries faced significant losses, with losses estimated at Tk2 crore for raw materials and Tk5-7 crore due to factory closures. Despite Titas’ request for mobile court proceedings to disconnect illegal connections, there has been no response from the district administration.
