Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company has asked for an increase in the price of residential gas amid ongoing energy shortages, despite inflation already putting pressure on consumers. In a letter to Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission, Titas proposed raising gas prices for a single burner stove from Tk990 to Tk1,379 and for a double burner stove from Tk1,080 to Tk1,591. The company argues that non-metered residential gas users are using more gas than the limit set by the BERC, with some experts supporting the claim. However, the Consumers Association of Bangladesh senior VP called the demand absurd, claiming that it aims to raise gas prices to legitimise corruption and gas theft.
