Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Limited is launching two projects aimed at bringing 1.75 million more households into the prepaid gas metering system within the next five years. These projects have an estimated cost of Tk6,234 crore, with the World Bank and Asian Development Bank (ADB) contributing Tk4,664 crore. Once completed, the prepaid metering will cover approximately 81.79% of household users under the state-owned company.
Currently, Titas has around 26.63 lakh household connections, with 8,600 meters already installed through ADB financing. An additional 320,000 prepaid meters are being installed with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) assistance.
The projects are pending approval by the Planning Commission. They aim to save 26 cubic meters of gas per household user each month, reduce gas wastage, detect leaks, and increase awareness of gas usage. This move is expected to lower methane and carbon dioxide emissions, aligning with environmental goals. The Planning Commission has suggested avoiding a 10% increase in meter costs and reducing monthly meter rent after a review. The World Bank and ADB will provide loans for these projects, with the remaining funding coming from internal sources and the government.
