With the rise of e-commerce, scandals have also increased, leaving around Tk 127 crore in refunds stuck in payment gateways over the past decade. To address this, the GoB established an Escrow system for these payments. A report by a nine-member probe committee formed by GoB reveals that the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) received 35,437 complaints from consumers seeking compensation. Of these, 16,667 cases have been resolved. Government documents show that Tk 534 crore was held in escrow, with Tk 407 crore disbursed after resolving complaints.
A DNCRP member noted that fund disbursement remains slow and suggested that involving the Ministry of Commerce and BB could expedite the process. A commerce ministry secretary reported that Tk 88.14 crore has been paid out immediately but mentioned that some companies are absconding due to fake or untraceable details.Â
