Following Sheikh Hasina’s resignation and departure from Bangladesh on August 5, remittance inflows have surged significantly. In the first 17 days of August, remittance through legal channels totaled Tk 13,374 crore, with a notable increase from $9.56 crore in the first three days of the month to $38.71 crore between August 4 and 10.
Central bank data reveals that remittance inflow reached $114.42 crore during this period. This amount, when converted at Tk 118 per USD, equals approximately Tk 13,374 crore. State-owned banks received $15.29 crore, specialized banks like Krishi Bank obtained $3.77 crore, private banks secured over $94.14 crore, and foreign banks got $21.5 lakh. Notably, ten banks did not receive any remittance during this time. The uptick in legal remittance inflow follows a period of reduced remittance due to a loss of confidence in the previous government, with expatriates previously turning to illegal hundi systems.
