Tk 60,000 Crore Printed Money Cited as Cause for High Inflation

Economic Tag: Inflation

The finance adviser stated that the printing of Tk 60,000 crore by the previous government is a key factor behind the ongoing high inflation, which will take time to reverse. While overall inflation eased to 10.49% in August, down from 11.66% in July, it remains in double digits for the second consecutive month. This places the average inflation for the current financial year (July 2024–June 2025) at 11.07%, close to the 11.15% recorded in 2010–11. The adviser highlighted that although multiple factors contribute to the inflation, the Bangladesh Bank’s excessive money printing over the last two years is the main cause. The interim government is working to maintain the supply chain of essential goods to ease pressure on consumers. Addressing concerns about new extortionists, the adviser noted that time and political cooperation are needed to address the issue, which is not directly related to the economy or commerce.
