Bangladesh faces severe income and wealth inequality, with wealth disparity significantly surpassing income gaps. The Gini coefficient for income inequality rose from 0.48 in 2016 to 0.50 in 2022, while wealth inequality increased from 0.82 to 0.84. Wealth is concentrated among the top 10%, exacerbated by intergenerational inheritance, tax inefficiencies, corruption, and inadequate policies. Land accounts for half of reported wealth, with significant disparities in land value favoring the affluent due to better infrastructure and location advantages.
While Bangladesh has a wealth surcharge, its impact is limited compared to inheritance taxes in countries like the U.S. and Scandinavia. Economists emphasize tax reform, curbing corruption, and promoting equitable infrastructure development to reduce disparities. Alarmingly, the bottom 50% of the population owns just 5% of assets, underscoring systemic inequality.
