Two solar power plants, with a combined capacity of 310 megawatts, in Jamalpur and Munshiganj, Bangladesh, are awaiting approval. The proposal-processing committee under the Power Division has finalized tariff rates for the plants, and the proposal has been sent to the cabinet committee on government purchases for approval.
A 180-MW plant will be constructed in Jamalpur Sadar, while a 130-MW solar power plant will be built in Gazaria Upazila, Munshiganj. The projects will be developed on a “build-own-and-operate” basis, with tariffs agreed upon after negotiations. The approval of these solar power plants reflects the government’s increased focus on renewable energy as it aims to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and cut emissions. Bangladesh currently has a renewable energy generation capacity of approximately 1,195 MW.
