UCEP Bangladesh and Standard Chartered Launch Entrepreneurship Initiative

UCEP Bangladesh and Standard Chartered have partnered to launch an entrepreneurship development initiative aimed at empowering 2,000 vulnerable youths with employable skills and entrepreneurship training. The program, called “Giving Wings to Dreams for Youth Empowerment Programme,” will be implemented in the Gazipur district from May 2023 to April 2025, with a focus on creating sustainable change within the local community. The initiative was inaugurated by the state minister for youth and sports, at the UCEP TVET Institute in Gazipur.

The collaboration will provide skills training, mid-level management, and entrepreneurship development opportunities to the beneficiaries, prioritizing inclusivity with 50% female representation and 2% representation of persons with disabilities. By equipping underprivileged youth and adults with essential skills, the project aims to improve their socio-economic status and contribute to the overall growth of Bangladesh. The partnership between UCEP Bangladesh and Standard Chartered has already had a significant impact on uplifting underprivileged youth and communities in Bangladesh, promoting skills-based education, and fostering socio-economic development.

UCB Board Cancels Tk 500 Million Mutual Fund Investment

The new board of United Commercial Bank (UCB) has cancelled a Tk 500 million investment plan in a close-ended mutual fund, initially approved by the previous board. The previous board, dominated by the family of former land minister Saifuzzaman Chowdhury, was dissolved by the Bangladesh Bank on August 27. The change followed political shifts after the fall of the Hasina-led government. Following the cancellation, UCB's stock rose 1% to Tk 12.30 per share. UCB reported a profit of Tk 1.27 billion for the first six months of 2024.

State Banks Call for Overhaul of GM and DMD Promotion Policies

Officials from state-owned banks Agrani, Janata, and Sonali are calling for changes to the promotion and placement policy for general managers (GMs) and deputy managing directors (DMDs). In a letter to Finance Adviser Salehuddin Ahmed, signed by nearly 100 officials, they expressed concerns over being sidelined in favor of junior officials from Rupali Bank, who are advancing to higher positions.

S Alam Group Acquires Half of Islami Bank’s Total Loans

S Alam Group has taken over half of the loans disbursed by Islami Bank Bangladesh Ltd (IBBL), as disclosed by the bank's new Chairman, Md Obayed Ullah Al Masud. IBBL's total loans exceeded Tk 1.74 lakh crore by June, with S Alam securing a significant portion using overvalued assets. A reassessment of these assets is ongoing, with further details expected within a week. The bank, which faced a Tk 2,300 crore capital shortfall, has reduced the gap to Tk 2,000 crore and aims for improvement by year-end. A roadmap for recovery and restructuring has been set, with phases running until 2029.

Foreign Banks Lead in Female Workforce Representation at 27.73%

Foreign commercial banks in Bangladesh have the highest female representation, with 27.73% of their workforce being women. Private banks have 16.37% female staff, while state-owned banks have 16.76%. Overall, women make up 13.58% of board members in all banks.
