The number of unemployed individuals increased by 40,000 YoY in Q4 2023, reaching 2.35 million, with a noticeable decline in female labor force participation. Unemployed male workers decreased by 80,000 to 1.57 million, while unemployed female workers increased by 120,000 to 780,000. Female employment in the garment sector declined due to automation, impacting the demand for female workers.

Female workers in the garment sector have reduced from 80% to 57%. Increased opportunities in non-farm activities in rural areas also contributed to women’s withdrawal from the job market. Despite a decline in agriculture employment, the overall employed workforce increased by 70,000 to 71.1 million, with growth in the service and manufacturing sectors. The unemployment rate reached 3.2% in Q4 2023, up from 3.15% YoY. Experts suggest addressing the impact of mechanization on female employment by enhancing mechanical skills training for women.
