Severe flash floods in southeastern Bangladesh have affected over 5.82 million people, leaving many without shelter, healthcare, or basic supplies. The floods, intensified by climate change, have overwhelmed major rivers and caused widespread devastation.
The UNFPA has raised concerns about the heightened risks for women, adolescent girls, and gender-diverse populations. Over 78,000 pregnant women are in the affected areas, with thousands expected to give birth soon. These groups face severe challenges due to a lack of essential healthcare, clean water, and safe shelter, and are at increased risk of gender-based violence, especially in overcrowded evacuation centers.
UNFPA, supported by the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and Australian Aid, is providing emergency reproductive health services and supplies through mobile clinics in Noakhali, Feni, and Khagrachari. Despite these efforts, urgent, increased funding is needed to address the specific needs of the most vulnerable and respond to the escalating climate crisis.
