Children and Unicef have called on parliamentarians to safeguard allocations for education, health, and social protection in the national budget of Bangladesh. During a joint briefing organized by Unicef and the Parliamentary Caucus on Child Rights, children from across the country expressed their concerns, highlighting the need for support.
The proposed budget for FY2023-24 has seen a decline in allocations for education, health, and social protection compared to the previous year. Unicef emphasized the importance of maintaining investments in these critical social sectors to prevent regression in the well-being and rights of children. They urged parliamentarians to prioritize children in the budget and increase the health sector budget to deliver on the commitment to Universal Health Coverage. Additionally, attention was drawn to the decline in the education share of the budget and the need for adjusted entitlements to counteract inflation in social protection programs. Unicef commended the government and the Members of the Parliamentary Caucus for Child Rights for their efforts in working for children.
