UNOPS and UN Women Collaborate to Promote Gender Development

The United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) and UN Women, funded by the Government of Sweden and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) of the United Kingdom, organized an event titled “Pathways to Progress: Strengthening Bangladesh through Gender Responsive and Resilient Infrastructure.” This initiative aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 5, focusing on gender equality, and aims to enhance gender equality and resilience in infrastructure development in Bangladesh. The event emphasized the importance of resilient and inclusive infrastructure that considers diversity, accessibility, and cost. It highlighted the consequences of gender-blind infrastructure and stressed the need for gender-smart infrastructure to promote equitable access and sustainable development in Bangladesh.

A rising number of foreign nationals are seeking work permits in Bangladesh due to a shortage of skilled managers and an education system not aligned with industrial needs. In FY23, Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (Bida) approved 16,303 applications from 101 countries, an 8% increase from the previous year. Indians topped the list with 3,159 permits, followed by Chinese (2,339), Sri Lankans (759), and Belarusians (727).

Overseas Worker Outflow Decreases by 58% in June

Bangladesh's overseas employment sector has been significantly impacted by Malaysia's closure to foreign workers, resulting in a 58% drop in worker outflow in June compared to May, according to the Bureau of Manpower Employment and Training (BMET). The number of workers migrating from Bangladesh fell from 131,696 in May to 55,045 in June, reflecting the adverse effects of Malaysia's market shutdown since May 31, 2024.
