The National Board of Revenue (NBR) in Bangladesh has declared that all income generated from the Universal Pension Scheme (UPS), launched in August 2023, will be tax-free. Additionally, investors participating in the scheme will receive a tax rebate, aiming to incentivize engagement with the initiative.
Presently, certain sectors, such as savings certificates, life insurance premiums, and contributions to various funds, are eligible for tax rebates. According to the new income tax law, taxpayers can receive a tax rebate equivalent to 3% of their taxable income or 15% of the combined investment in specified sectors, up to Tk10 lakh, whichever is less. The Universal Pension Scheme, designed to provide financial security for individuals aged 18 and above, encompasses four schemes—Probash, Pragati, Surokkha, and Samata. Despite initial enthusiasm, the scheme has witnessed lower-than-expected public participation.
