Bangladesh’s apparel export to the United States has witnessed a significant decline in the first half of 2023, attributed to the global economic slowdown, high inflation, and rising interest rates dampening consumer demand. The ongoing effects of the Covid pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war have led to an inventory glut in US retail stores, hindering new orders. Bangladesh’s ready-made garment exports to the US totaled $3.82 billion in January-June 2023, a 23.55% drop from the previous year. The slowdown affected both export value and volume, while overall US apparel imports also fell by 23.17%. Despite the challenges, Bangladesh fared better than competitors like China and Vietnam. The Russia-Ukraine war further impacted demand and work orders, creating a challenging environment for the apparel industry.
