A recent US study reveals that American fashion companies are diversifying their apparel sourcing, favoring India due to growing risks in Bangladesh. The 2024 Fashion Industry Benchmarking Study highlights concerns over shipping delays, supply-chain disruptions, and political instability. India is perceived as more competitive, with better vertical integration and manufacturing agility.
For the first time since 2014, more US brands report sourcing from India (89%) than Bangladesh (86%). India rose to second place in 2024 from fourth in 2023, while Bangladesh fell to fourth. Around 60% of respondents plan to expand sourcing from India, leveraging its advanced local textile-manufacturing capabilities and lower geopolitical risks. Conversely, interest in expanding sourcing from Bangladesh dropped to 48% due to social compliance risks and limited product diversification.
