The United States has announced nearly $199 million in new assistance for Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh, as revealed by Under Secretary of State for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights Uzra Zeya during a United Nations General Assembly side event on September 24. This funding includes approximately $70 million from the Department of State’s Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration (PRM) and over $129 million from USAID, of which $78 million will be used to purchase and distribute food to Rohingya refugees and host communities through the Department of Agriculture’s Commodity Credit Corporation.
The assistance aims to save lives, provide shelter and food, enhance disaster preparedness, improve access to education and skills training, and prepare refugees for their potential return when conditions allow. Since August 2017, the US government has provided over $2.5 billion for the regional Rohingya response, including more than $2.1 billion for Bangladesh. The US remains committed to supporting crisis-affected communities and calls on other donors to continue their contributions.
