The kerb market in Bangladesh is experiencing a worsening dollar crisis, with exchange rates soaring from Tk 112 to 118 per dollar in just two weeks. The central bank and law enforcement agencies have taken action against money exchange houses accused of profiteering by charging higher rates.
Raids were conducted to ensure compliance with the previous rates of Tk 112 to 113 per dollar. However, in response to the raids, some money exchange houses have stopped selling dollars entirely, leading to a shortage in the open market. Several establishments had their licenses suspended and were sealed for selling dollars at inflated prices. Money changers are struggling to buy dollars at the current rate of Tk 110, making it difficult to maintain the Tk 112-113 selling price. The crisis has left individuals seeking dollars for travel or business transactions in a difficult situation.
