USD Soars 5% Amid Unrest

Economic Tag: Forex

The USD rate in the kerb market has risen from 118-119 to 124-125 BDT, marking a 5% increase in just two weeks amidst national unrest related to the quota reform movement.  The forex market has experienced volatility as remittance and dollar transfers were disrupted by a 120-hour internet blockade. An anonymous kerb market exchanger reported that the rates spiked to 124-125 BDT when the protests began. However, this increase was not fully acknowledged by the President of the Money Exchanger Association of Bangladesh, who claimed that his members were selling dollars at 119 BDT. He also noted a minor crisis due to a decrease in the rate of returning expatriates, who are a key source of dollar purchases.
