The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) predicts that wheat consumption in Bangladesh for food, seed, and industrial purposes will rise due to increased imports and a rebound in demand for flour, following a decrease in its prices. According to the USDA’s report on Bangladesh, the anticipated consumption during the marketing year 2023-24 is projected to reach 6.8 million tonnes, indicating a 5% increase from the previous forecast.
The report also highlights that wheat consumption estimates for fiscal year 2022-23 were 16% lower compared to the previous year, attributed to elevated local prices and reduced imports, affecting the consumption of wheat flour, known as “aata” and “maida” in Bangla. The USDA notes that the country’s feed industry had decreased rations due to high wheat prices in the past marketing year. Furthermore, the USDA raised its projections for wheat production to 1.1 million tonnes, citing farmers’ retention of acreage for better prices.
