In the marketing year 2023-24, Bangladesh’s rice production is expected to slightly decrease due to partial damage to the Aman rice crop caused by cyclone Midhili. The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) forecasts a milled rice production of 3.63 crore tonnes, down from 3.64 crore tonnes in the previous year.
The Aman season rice, traditionally rainfed, experienced reduced acreage of 57.50 lakh, a 2.54% decrease from the previous year. Cyclone Midhili affected 5-10% of the standing Aman paddy in southern coastal districts, resulting in a 5% drop in the production forecast to 1.39 crore tonnes. However, the production of Aus rice increased to 24 lakh tonnes, and the estimate for Boro rice output was raised by 1.52% to 2 crore tonnes.
The USDA lowered the forecast for rice imports to 5 lakh tonnes due to the government’s high tariff on rice imports, while wheat imports are projected to reach 60 lakh tonnes, a 17% increase from the previous year’s estimate of 51.2 lakh tonnes.
