Bangladesh anticipates increased maize cultivation due to higher grain prices and the country’s reliance on maize imports to meet the demands of feed mills. The Maize Association of Bangladesh reports that farmers are motivated by satisfying prices and the persistent grain deficit. Bangladesh requires 75 lakh tonnes of maize, but local production covers only 50 lakh tonnes, necessitating imports.
In the fiscal year 2022-23, maize cultivation expanded to 6 lakh hectares, and the Department of Agricultural Extension aims to cultivate maize on 6.23 lakh hectares in the current fiscal year. The USDA predicts an increase in maize acreage from 5.7 lakh hectares to 6 lakh hectares for the marketing year 2023-24, with a production forecast of 52 lakh tonnes.
However, farmers face rising cultivation costs, mainly due to increased seed prices caused by the depreciation of the taka against the US dollar. Despite challenges, the positive market sentiment and high corn prices are expected to drive increased maize cultivation.
