During their visit to Dhaka, the delegation from the US Trade Representative (USTR) expressed a desire to streamline the labor organization registration process in Bangladesh and advocated for greater opportunities for traditional trade unions in Export Processing Zones (EPZs). Led by USTR’s assistant for South and Central Asia, Brendan Lynch, the delegation conveyed these sentiments during a meeting with leaders of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) at their office in Uttara on Monday.
According to leaders present at the meeting, the USTR delegation proposed reducing the signature or support rate required from factory workers for the formation of a trade union from 20% to 10%. They also sought assistance from BGMEA to facilitate a more flexible process for trade union formation and inquired about the process of amending labor laws, stressing the need for further improvements in labor rights.
