The World Bank has granted $300 million to Bangladesh for the Gas Sector Efficiency Improvement and Carbon Abatement Project. The initiative aims to enhance gas distribution and end-use efficiency through pre-paid metering systems for residential and industrial consumers. It also focuses on reducing methane emissions along the natural gas value chain.
Over 1.2 million prepaid gas meters will be installed in Dhaka and Rajshahi Division, including a pilot of smart meters for industrial users. The project will also introduce Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) and Geographic Information System (GIS) to improve gas flow monitoring and identify methane leaks, aiding in greenhouse gas emission reduction. Bangladesh’s energy efficiency improvement aligns with its commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. The World Bank has been a significant development partner for Bangladesh, supporting various projects with over $40 billion in commitments over 50 years.
