The World Bank’s “Global Economic Prospects” warns of potential risks to Bangladesh’s GDP growth due to an economic slowdown in key export destinations, particularly the European Union and the USA. The estimated growth for the USA in FY24 is 1.6%, down from 2.5% in FY23, while the EU is expected to see 0.7% growth in FY24.
Bangladesh’s growth is anticipated to slow to 5.6% in FY2023-24 due to inflationary pressure and low foreign exchange reserves, with a potential pick-up to 5.8% in FY25. Import restrictions are likely to persist, hindering private investment, while public investment remains resilient. The report notes financial sector vulnerabilities and heightened uncertainty around elections in 2024, advising post-election growth-friendly policies for improved prospects.
