The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) is set to enhance food assistance for Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, starting January 1, 2024. The monthly food ration will rise from $8 to $10 per person, and locally fortified rice will be gradually introduced to the assistance package.
Declining resources led to a reduction in food entitlements in 2023, resulting in a sharp increase in malnutrition and negative coping mechanisms among the Rohingya population. By November, 90% of the population faced inadequate food consumption, with child malnutrition reaching alarming levels. The WFP aims to address this crisis by increasing rations and incorporating locally fortified rice, appealing for additional funding to bridge the $61 million gap.
