The price of wheat in the international market has dropped to 2021 levels due to global instability, contrasting with the domestic market where it has surged. The devaluation of the currency and a dollar crisis have led to increased import costs, raising wheat prices by Tk 150 to Tk 250 per maund in the wholesale market over the past week.
Flour prices have also risen by 3-5 taka per kg. Bangladesh’s government wheat stock has dwindled to just over 1 lakh 34 thousand tons, the lowest in years. The country relies on imports for 80-85% of its wheat needs, and obstacles in source countries like India, combined with the currency crisis, contribute to the market’s uncertainty. Traders anticipate further instability if current currency market conditions persist.
