The government’s decision to facilitate egg imports has led to a slight decrease in wholesale egg prices in domestic markets, particularly in Dhaka. Prices have dropped by Tk15 to Tk20 per 100 eggs in various wholesale markets. However, this decrease hasn’t yet been reflected in retail market prices.
In Dhaka’s Moghbazar and Malibagh markets, traders reported buying 100 brown eggs at Tk1,125 to Tk1,130, down from Tk1,140 to Tk1,145. White eggs are priced at around Tk1,105 per 100. Despite the reduction in wholesale prices, most retail shops continue to sell eggs at previous rates, with brown eggs at Tk144 per dozen and white eggs at Tk144 to Tk145 per dozen.
Retailers express hope for further wholesale price reductions that would allow them to sell eggs at the government-set price of Tk12 per piece. This price drop comes after a two-year period of rising egg prices, which reached Tk60 per hali (4 pieces) last year (2022).
