Winter vegetable saplings in Bogura’s Shajahanpur upazila have seen a substantial price increase, up to four to five times higher than year 2022. Importers and traders attribute this surge to the elevated cost of seeds due to a stronger US dollar and issues related to letters of credit. In the fiscal year 2021-22, the demand for vegetable seeds in the country was 2,750 metric tonnes and 3,407 metric tonnes were produced, according to the Ministry of Agriculture.
Inclement weather conditions have also damaged a significant portion of the saplings, impacting supply. Farmers from various districts are grappling with the soaring prices of saplings, with chili saplings rising from Tk 200-300 to Tk 1,400 per thousand, eggplant saplings from Tk 400-500 to Tk 800 per thousand, and cauliflower saplings from Tk 500-700 to Tk 1,600 per thousand. Tomato saplings have seen a particularly stark increase, going from Tk 400 per thousand to Tk 1,800-2,000 per thousand. Increased production costs and concerns about potential yield losses add to the challenges faced by farmers.
