Bangladesh has initiated the trial run of the world’s third Omni Processor, a sanitation innovation inaugurated by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Situated in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar, the project, implemented by the Department of Public Health Engineering, is a crucial waste treatment facility costing Tk60 crore.
This innovative system, pioneered by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, converts human-generated fecal sludge into valuable byproducts like energy, distilled water, and ash. The trial period involves processing 30 cubic meters of sewage waste daily, generating 60-70 kilowatts of electricity. The system doesn’t rely on the national grid, emphasizing sustainability. Ankur Scientific of India and SR Corporation of Bangladesh oversee the project, with the Asian Development Bank financing.
